This Preview of the OnePlus 13: Could you live here?

We've been treated to some outstanding flagship products from OnePlus for almost ten years now. The company's flagships are frequently praised as some of the best "hidden-value" gadgets available, which typically outperform most flagships and deliver a strong performance. This seems to be a recurrent trend.

The sole issue? Though not exactly what we'd call a household name, it's probably the most obscure moniker that's well-known in tech circles. Could that change with the company's next flagship? We've been asking this question each year, and since the OnePlus 13 is arriving soon, it makes perfect sense to ask it again.

Although the device's larger worldwide debut is still pending, it was already revealed for the Chinese mainland market.

Can the OnePlus 13 mark a sea change for the company?

OnePlus's change of heart

With a gradually developing design language that hasn't been particularly distinctive but has always been somewhat recognizable to phone enthusiasts, OnePlus phones have always had a sophisticated appearance. For better or worse, it has also stayed rather stable over the last few years.

In any case, the new OnePlus 13 is here to both continue and alter the stylistic history.

Finally pursuing the design trend that has dominated the smartphone market for the previous few years, OnePlus' next flagship now sports flat edges. The business was among the last to adopt the slightly curved design language, which provided us with curved front displays and sloping backplates for optimal ergonomics. However, it's time for a change.

That one might also have some useful advantages: a flat side frame makes it possible for the business to make much better use of the interior space and may have contributed to the unusually large battery on board, but more on that later.

Although there is a tiny curvature toward each of the aluminum frame's four sides, the display appears to be flat overall.

With a weight of 220 grams, the phone is comparatively light. It is also marginally bigger but somewhat shorter than the OnePlus 12. This is important mentioning even though it probably won't have a significant impact on ergonomics. In addition, the device is incredibly thin—just 8.5 mm thick—which is remarkable considering how much hardware is packed into it.

The highest possible certification on board for dust and water protection, IP69, is a notable new feature. An even greater sense of security should result from IP69's complete protection against strong water jets and submersion, which is an improvement above the now-standard IP68 certification.

Thankfully, the iconic OnePlus three-way ring switch is included here, and it's really beautiful.

With three color options—White, Obsidian, and Blue with a faux leather finish—OnePlus is staying safe with regard to color. Such customized finishes are nothing new to OnePlus, so we're not shocked!

Examining the OnePlus 13's display in more detail reveals a 6.8-inch OLED screen with QHD+ resolution, support for HDR+, and the same 4,500 nits of claimed peak brightness as the OnePlus 12 (though this most likely refers to the greatest brightness that a single pixel at full power can achieve). The normal brightness is what counts, and it appears that we have an improvement over the OnePlus 12 with 800 nits as opposed to 600 nits.

"Local refresh rate" is another innovative new feature that display manufacturer BOE's has brought about. In contrast to traditional displays, which refresh the entire screen at once, this allows distinct parts of a display to refresh at different rates. That might significantly affect the screen's overall effectiveness. The refresh rate stays at a minimum of 1Hz and a maximum of 120Hz.

There is no Corning glass here because the screen is shielded by Crystal Shield glass.
The OnePlus 13 Camera is amazing.

For the cameras on its flagship devices, OnePlus has been working with renowned photographic company Hasselblad for years. Fortunately, it appears that this also applies to the OnePlus 13, which is fantastic news because we're generally pleased with how OnePlus phones have performed.

With its 1/1.4" 50MP Sony LYT-808 stacked primary camera, 23mm focal length, brilliant f/1.6 aperture, and optical image stabilization (OIS) to maintain stable pictures, the OnePlus 13 should be a powerful camera.

Next up is a 50MP Samsung JN5 ultrawide lens with an f/2.0 aperture that provides a view equivalent to 15mm. A 50MP Sony LYT-600 telephoto sensor completes the set. With its f/2.6 aperture, OIS, and 3X optical zoom, it allows you to get up close to the action.

Is the OnePlus 13's performance and power too much?

The new Snapdragon 8 Elite, which will power the OnePlus 13, has finally brought Android into the era of 3nm CPUs. It appears that the new Qualcomm chip will be a powerful powerhouse, which bodes well for the OnePlus 13's performance possibilities.

To be honest, OnePlus phones have never seemed sluggish or lacking in performance (in fact, most flagships have done so for years), but the switch to the 3nm architecture will undoubtedly make things much better.

Excessive heat is one potential problem with the 3nm production node, which might fast result in throttling. OnePlus has already considered this possibility. In order to handle the extra heat and maintain a steady performance during demanding jobs and games, the OnePlus 13 has a massive 9925mm2 vapor chamber.

The top-end OnePlus 13 model will have up to 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to a whole terabyte of on-board storage in addition to the flagship Qualcomm CPU. But there are also more affordable models with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage and 16GB RAM and 512GB storage.

Software for the OnePlus 13

Android 15 will be pre-installed on the OnePlus 13. The phone will come with Oppo's ColorOS 15 in China, while the international edition will undoubtedly include the classic OxygenOS.

Regarding software support lifetime, OnePlus declared last year that it would maintain its phones for five years, and there isn't any reason to think that figure will increase. Do not be misled; five years is by no means a short period of time; it just sounds "bad" because the majority of other Android manufacturers have switched to a seven-year software support window.

Last month, OnePlus revealed OxygenOS 15, a significant software update that will prioritize artificial intelligence.

Below is a list of some of OxygenOS 15's main features:

a cosmetic makeover with new icons, and the Shelf widget panel in OxygenOS 15 features several new cards that improve use;

a new Split mode that makes it simple to navigate between the Quick Settings panel and the notification drawer;

a new feature for parallel processing that attempts to offer smooth animation transitions throughout the system;

OnePlus Take: a smooth transition between your home screen and the always-on display for the wallpaper;

By offering three-app multitasking, the OnePlus Canvas enhances multitasking by enabling you to freely transition between two programs while maintaining their full window sizes;
Home screen personalization ("glass" patterns, blurred wallpapers, etc.) and lock screen improvements (clock color, "glass" textures, blurred wallpapers, depth effects, etc.)
OnePlus Share—a cross-platform version of AirDrop—allows for smooth file sharing between OnePlus and iOS devices.

And in terms of AI, OnePlus is making a huge leap to join the trend:

With just one click, AI Detail & AI Unblur can automatically sharpen blurry photos and improve low-resolution photos by utilizing artificial intelligence;
When shooting through windows, the AI Reflection Eraser eliminates undesired reflections;
Using natural language processing, you may search across apps with Global Search & Circle to Search.
With Pass Scan, you may store boarding passes straight into Google Wallet.
AI Notes: AI sorts and arranges your notes automatically;
In the majority of chat apps, AI Reply enables you to respond with contextually relevant responses. The OnePlus 13 will have all of those features, as well as those of some of its earlier models, including the OnePlus Open, 12, 12R, 11, 11R, and 10.

OnePlus 13 Battery: A significant modification

The exceptional battery life and lightning-fast charging speeds of OnePlus phones have always been, in my opinion, their most interesting new features.

The OnePlus 13 is not going to let you down! The phone's small 8.5mm shell houses a huge 6,000mAh battery, which is an amazing achievement.

How can this be? Well, OnePlus has made use of the extremely promising lithium-silicon battery technology, which may be the long-awaited battery innovation that enables quicker charging and greater capacity in a comparatively small container. With any luck, this will allow us to eventually surpass the 5,000mAh battery limit that the majority of Android flagships have established.

The charging is always the most intriguing feature, but OnePlus phones have always had excellent battery life, and we expect the OnePlus 13 to be no different. The OnePlus 13 supports 50W AIRVOOC wireless charging and 100W wired SUPERVOOC charging, just like the majority of its predecessors.

The latter needs a custom wireless charger, but we hope OnePlus keeps included its lightning-fast wall adapters in the box because they significantly raise the product's worth.
An overview of the OnePlus 13

These additional features—a larger battery, a speedier chipset, and a promising display—are all welcome additions to an already respectable flagship family that never seems to veer off course.

Things are looking bright for OnePlus, which may once more be the best-kept secret in the Android market. It's a phone with amazing hardware, fantastic software, and, regrettably, the wrong moniker. The latter may make it impossible for the latter to ever outperform the iPhones and Galaxies in the US, where the competition for popularity is already fierce.

We are eager to get our hands on the OnePlus 13 and watch how things work out for the Chinese corporation that despises having a family.
